Abstract

Objective: To determine the level of knowledge, attitude and practices of mothers with children 6-23 months old regarding proper weaning and complimentary feeding. Design: Descriptive retrospective design Setting: Out-patient department Participants: Ninety-six mothers with children ages 6-23 months. Methods: Participants were selected using simple random sampling. Participants with children ages 6-23 months, any gender, with or without minor ailments were included. Anthropometric measurements were taken by the examiner during consult. Data extracted using a questionnaire-based Module from Macias and Glasauer (25). The data collected were tabulated and presented as percentage. Results: Most of the mothers are ages between 20-24 years old, have normal body mass index, high-school graduates, monthly meal budget less than 5000 pesos, and from Dasmarinas.  Mothers scored a total of 64.75% on overall knowledge for complimentary feeding. A positive response was observed among 73 mothers on the benefits of meal diversity but only 48 mothers were able to provide it. Seventy-eight of the mothers believed that breastfeeding is good for their child but only 49 were able to continue breastfeeding after 6 months. Multiple barriers cited are money, work and time. Seventeen from 23 mothers had continued breastfeeding for children more than 12 months of age. Among the 79 children, egg is the most common food given. Other food groups such as meat and vegetables were often lacking until more than 12 months old. Conclusions: A satisfactory score was observed in mothers regarding complimentary feeding. A lot of mothers think it is beneficial to continue breastfeeding after 6 and 12 months, and have a diversed frequent diet. However, multiple barriers prohibit or prevent mothers to abide by their beliefs. Keywords: complimentary feeding
