Abstract

BACKROUND AND RELEVANCE: Febrile seizures are the most common seizure disorder in childhood. They have been observed in 2-5% of children before the age of 5. The age of onset is from 6 months to 5 years with a peak at 18-22 months. Onset outside the age range is not acceptable for the pure forms of febrile seizures. Having children with febrile seizure can be alarming especially if seizure episodes are present beyond the age range. OBJECTIVE: To determine the clinical features and outcome among patients aged 6 to 19 years old with febrile seizure at De La Salle University Medical Center from January 2005-December 2010DESIGN: Cross-sectional Retrospective StudySETTING: De La Salle University Medical Center. PATIENTS/PARTICIPANTS: 23 patients aged 6-19 years old diagnosed with febrile seizures at De La Salle University Medical Center. RESULTS: Among 23 patients in the study, all patients belong to the 6-9 years age group, males (52.17%) are more affected than females. Seven (30.43%) were known to have febrile seizure in the family and 5 (21.74%) have family history of seizure disorder. Most patients (43.48%) presented with fever that have respiratory symptoms such as cough and colds. Sixteen (69.57%) have history of febrile seizure before the age of 6. Only one patient was diagnosed to have seizure disorder. CONCLUSION: Febrile seizures that occurred beyond the age range can be alarming and can lead to epilepsy later in life.  In dealing with patients, a detailed history and a thorough physical and neurological examination must be performed well. In the study, most of the patients presented with febrile seizure have history of febrile seizure before the age of 6, in which we can say that the febrile seizure can be present later beyond the expected age.
